School Profile
It is the mission of Woodland Elementary School to provide a high-quality education for each student and an optimum learning environment that will aid in the development of the total child through a cooperative effort among home, school, and the community. We believe every student has an idea worth investigating, and it is our vision that STEM practices and procedures enable all students to thrive as problem solvers who empathize, ideate, design, and engineer to bring their ideas to life.
Located at 1130 Spalding Drive, Atlanta, Georgia, this school was built in 1971. It sits on a wooded 24-acre campus that features multiple outdoor learning gardens and spaces, newly built playgrounds, a new state of the art Aquaponics lab and so much more! Since the school was built, four renovations have been completed to accommodate growth in Sandy Springs.
The current enrollment is about 900 students, in grades pre-k through fifth, and includes specialized classrooms for students with special needs. We also offer instruction for advanced students and those identified as Talented & Gifted (TAG), and services for students eligible for English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Programs. In addition to academics, our students receive physical education, music, art, STEM, and library specials.
Woodland is ethnically, culturally and economically diverse and reflects our local community. This diversity provides students with the unique opportunity to grow and learn together while appreciating differences. Through our Positive Behavior Intervention Program (PBIS), students are taught the importance of empathy and how to be aware and understanding of our human and cultural differences.
Woodland also has a diverse staff of approximately 140 people. Our professional staff is highly qualified and continues to pursue additional training. Most of the staff have bachelor's degrees and many have pursued a masters' and specialist degree as well. In addition to degrees, many of the staff have secured other certifications including reading endorsements, leadership, coaching, ESOL, TAG and more.
In 2016, Woodland became the 16th elementary in the state of Georgia to become STEM certified and renewed their STEM certification in March of 2023. To earn STEM certification, the school submitted an application showing that it meets rigorous criteria, such as evidence of teacher collaboration, business and industry partnerships, high levels of math and science instruction and an integrated, project-based STEM curriculum. Our priority includes having educational initiatives that integrate engineering and the arts in the fields of math and science while incorporating the use of effective technology. We expose our students to a holistic teaching approach that integrates all of these subjects to increase student achievement.
Woodland offers a unique approach to the curriculum through STEM subject integration while also incorporating the arts. We provide students with multiple opportunities to learn in various hands-on settings, including edible and sensory garden spaces, a prototyping lab, data dig lab, tech lab, and kitchen.
One of the important components of Woodland Elementary School is the full involvement of our parents. Woodland places great emphasis on parent involvement. With the help of our Parent Involvement Liaison and award-winning Friends of Woodland PTO, parents are given opportunities to become active partners in their children's education. Woodland believes in a TEAM approach - Together Everyone Achieves More. The school receives strong, continuous support from the Woodland PTO. The organization sponsors a diversity of programs that meet individual student needs, emphasizes the whole child, and encourages and supports the parent/student team concept.
Numerous teacher-led committees enable parents and students to participate in school functions such as Fall Festival, International Night, STEM Night, Black History Month, Book Fair, and several After-School Programs, such as Science Olympiad, Meeple People, and Lego Club.
A resource which has proven invaluable to the academic success of Woodland students, has been our partnership with area businesses. They support our students through financial contributions, volunteering efforts, mentoring programs and tutoring. Some of these wonderful organizations include Publix, Kroger, Chick-Fil-A, Walmart, Dunwoody Nature Center, Equifax, GA Tech Biomedical Engineering Department, Delta Credit Union, United Parcel Service (UPS), Whole Foods, Leadership Sandy Springs and Sandy Springs Education Force. In addition, the volunteers from the Sandy Springs Optimist Club and Cox Enterprises work with our students both as reading coaches and mentors. Their generous donation of both time and money has helped each and every student at Woodland Elementary School.
We take great PRIDE in being Woodland Wildcats!
