English Language Arts

At Woodland, we believe all of our Wildcat Scholars should be equipped with a strong foundation towards proficiency in reading and writing. Our literacy instruction is rooted in the Science of Reading and helping students develop important habits while practicing skills.   Classroom instruction and content curriculum support the domains of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension in engaging ways.  There is a heavy emphasis on building a solid foundation in the earlier grades. Each room comes equipped with a classroom library, so students have a choice in selecting rich literature driven by their own interests. Teachers carefully plan instruction that integrates transcription, grammar, and composition skills while practicing reading comprehension. Instruction is also tied to Problem-Based Learning so that our Scholars can see how these skills connect to what they are learning in class. They also see how different careers need reading and writing in order to be successful at their careers.
